Marie from Sandyford thought her knight in shining armour had arrived when she answered the door to a man offering to replenish her gravel which had once again been washed away by the torrent of rainwater which runs down the side of her house as she is perched on the side of a hill. All was going to plan on the gravel front but then the man offered to install an accro drain to eliminate this problem.
An accro drain is a long channel with a grid on top to catch any debris fouling the drain.Initially Marie was told that the water the accro would collect would just soak away into the ground (a soak away) but Marie wasn't impressed so the man and his colleagues began excavating the sewer nearby and began breaking the top off this with a blunt instrument. They then placed a bit of flexible pipe over this cut out section and covered the pipe over once more hoping that the rainwater would soak into the sewer.
Not only did the rainwater not get away according to plan but now marie had the extra problem in that the sewer was now starting to block up!
So Marie rang ajax and when Dara went to clear the drain he knew there was something wrong. A closer examination with the camera not only revealed the damaged sewer but also the 'o' ring which seals the joints of the pipe was sitting crossways blocking everything that came down.
The sewer was excavated and repaired and the accro drain was plumbed in correctly with a gully installed at the outlet of the accro to prevent any smells from the sewer coming out.
So the lesson to be learnt really is if a fella calls to your door and promises you the sun moon and stars ask for a few references before letting him carry out any extensive works.
When your drain is starting to overflow and you decide to lift the manhole and all you see is a load of stones it usually means only one thing "You've got rats".Read Full Article

The main sewer outlet was blocked so the waste had nowhere to go and found the easiest path....Read Full Article
