Looks like the severe floods we've encountered recently are an inevitable consequence of global warming .The sheer volume of rainfall is too much for our 100 year old drains around the city, but one way householders can protect themselves from water backing up through the sewerage system is to install what we call non-return valves. These are like a cat-flap that will only open out. They let the waste pass out and then close again to stop any water/waste returning. They are not 100% effective as they can stick open so they need to be serviced every now and again but if my house was constantly flooding up through the drains l'd put one in.

When your drain is starting to overflow and you decide to lift the manhole and all you see is a load of stones it usually means only one thing "You've got rats".Read Full Article
The tenant upstairs in this property in North Strand was oblivious to the fact that every time they flushed their loo it was dissappearing from their view but was re-surfacing up through the toilet downstairs. Alas the unit downstairs was un-occupied for a considerable period so nobody noticed events that were unfolding.
