We got a call-out to Sandyford recently for a blocked drain. The drain was blocked in a manhole in the front garden but the householder didn't know this and thought it was just a blocked sink and poured some caustic soda granules down the plug hole. We arrived on site and blew out the drain with the jet no problem there but we were surprised to see the sink was still blocked.
We tried to clear the sink using normal methods like plunging/using a wire snake etc but to no avail.
We had to disassemble the sink waste completely to discover the caustic granules had set rock hard in the waste and the only way to dislodge it was using a hammer and heavy duty screwdriver.
Fortunately we were able to disassemble this waste but what if the caustic had set under the floor or under ground, a horrible thought. Our advice don't use caustic soda
