There are various ways rats can get into your property and one way is up through the sewers. The photos here show a very good and easy to install rat guard.
It is basically a spring loaded device that just pops into the outlet of a manhole which secured it in place. At the top of the appliance is a 'tongue' which only opens one way to let the waste pass through and won't let our furry friends sneak upstream.
The unit should be checked regularly for any waste snagging on the tongue causing a potential blockage. The unit is not designed to trap the rats just to restrict their movements. The tenant upstairs in this property in North Strand was oblivious to the fact that every time they flushed their loo it was dissappearing from their view but was re-surfacing up through the toilet downstairs.
