The EU announced yesterday a crack down on single use plastics,wet wipes and sanitary products. You don’t have to be a sanitation engineer to witness the harm to the environment that these products do particularly to our oceans. With many wet wipe packaging displaying “Can be flushed down the toilet “ on them, where do they think these wipes are going to end up? Do they think some bloke is going to fish them out of a sewerage treatment plant down in ringsend because that is the only way you are going to get them out before they enter the Irish Sea.
Awareness raising measures coupled with standardized labelling for sanitary products and wet wipes on the impact of littering will only work in conjunction with penalties for indiscretions (shall we say), for both producers and end users.

The tenant upstairs in this property in North Strand was oblivious to the fact that every time they flushed their loo it was dissappearing from their view but was re-surfacing up through the toilet downstairs. Alas the unit downstairs was un-occupied for a considerable period so nobody noticed events that were unfolding.
