Burst pipes can occur in anything from putting a nail in a heating pipe putting down a floorboard, to normal wear and tear or corrosion. During periods of very cold weather water in pipes freeze, expand and then split the pipe. Proper lagging of pipework and maintaining the house at a reasonable temperature will assist in preventing this happening. Isolating the incoming water supply and draining down storage tanks in the attic may also assist.
